A recent review of twelve studies including over 15,000 women was published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The authors found that adequate dietary calcium (at least 1 g of calcium daily) before pregnancy and in the first trimester seems to decrease the incidence and severity of pre-eclampsia. Calcium supplementation was also linked to a reduction in rare but serious cases of 'maternal death or serious morbidity'.
