Practice News

New faces
We are very excited to announce that Johanna Swift Hart, CNM, who has been working per diem at our Joseph Smith sites since March, will be joining MaMA full time as of November 4.  Johanna is a 1999 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania nurse-midwifery education program.   She lives in Belmont with her husband, daughter and son.  As a full timer, Johanna will begin to assume on-call responsibility as well as continuing to work at Joe Smith.

Some time early in 2008, we’ll also welcome 2 new per diem midwives:  Susan Cassel, CNM who moved to the Boston area last year from San Diego, and is very involved with ALACE (Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators, an organization that offers doula training); and Erin Smith, CNM, who moved here this past July from the Sacramento area.  Susan and Erin will cover one or two call shifts weekly and help us out more at vacation times.   This will enable yours truly to catch up with some administrative projects that have had to be put on hold since the summer. Look for photos and bios from Johanna, Susan and Erin on the website soon.

In addition to all this richness, we’re pleased to be mentoring Julia Dickinson, SNM, a Yale midwifery student who will be with us for her final semester of school, January to May 2008.  She’ll be a great, if temporary, addition to the MaMA group.  You’ll hear more about her in the coming weeks.

She’s got class
Megan MacInnes, who is a certified Hypnobirthing instructor, will begin offering Hypnobirthing classes at Mount Auburn Hospital in January 2008.  For information, call 617.499.5121.

Conventional?
Next year, the Annual Meeting (known lovingly to us as “Convention”) of the American College of Nurse-Midwives will be held in Boston in late May.  Several of us submitted proposals for presentations at Convention, and as of this writing, the submissions by Deb Gowen, Megan MacInnes and Megan’s co-presenter Maryann Long have all been accepted.   The fate of the other submissions is not yet known to your intrepid reporter.

She’s baaaack!  Well, almost, anyway.  We eagerly anticipate the return of Julie Mann from her maternity leave on November 13.  Baby Sebastian, who was born July 31, is 3 months old today.  Initially, Julie will focus on learning to first assist at cesarean sections, and do some weekend call shifts.

Personal news
As I write, Kathryn Kravetz Carr and her husband of 2+ months, Chris, are on their way to France and Italy for their somewhat delayed honeymoon.  Kathryn and Chris were married in Seattle on August 18.  Coincidentally, Chris’s mom Katherine (get it?) is the immediate past president of the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

Robyn Churchill is still running…she finished the Bay State Marathon on October 14 in 3:42.  Next up is Phoenix in January, and then the Big One: Boston in April!
