News from MaMA, Fall 2006
Practice news
Lots of changes this fall! we hardly know where to start…
Marcia Snyder is cutting back her hours at MaMA in order to join the study team of Dr. Kee-Hak Lim, our perinatology consultant (whom many of you may have seen for ultrasounds), at Beth Israel. The study involves a search for chemical markers in blood that could be useful in predicting who will develop pre-eclampsia later in pregnancy, and is expected to last about a year and a half.
Debbie Fiedler, who has been working per diem taking call and teaching our childbirth classes, is now officially a 20-hour part time employee, and is starting to see clients at the Hope Ave office and the Center for Women in addition to her previous responsibilities.
Ann Abbott, a dedicated midwife for the past 13 years and well known to the Waltham community by virtue of her years at the Hope Ave office, will “semi-retire” at the end of this year. We think Ann’ll still be seeing her clients in Waltham now and then, as her new schedule permits.
We’ll welcome a new midwife to the group in December. Tamara Jessiman is a 1999 graduate of the BU midwifery education program. She comes to us from the Lowell Community Health Center, and has also worked at the Cambridge Birth Center. In her previous life, she was a dental hygienist! She has 2 children, speaks Spanish, and is an accomplished quilter.
On September 30 we celebrated the 1st birthday of our Postpartum Support Group (see photos in the Gallery). It’s been a very successful year, owing in large part to the efforts of Deb Gowen, with the help of Julie Mann and Ann.
We also celebrated the birth of our 5000th baby on August 29! The mom and baby received a basket of goodies donated by hospital personnel and some local businesses. Kathryn Kravetz, who attended the birth, was pictured in some of the local newspapers holding that very special baby #5000.
October 1-7 was National Nurse-Midwifery Week. This year, we decorated newborn onesies with all kinds of great fabric paint and gave one to each baby born during that week. Kathryn worked with the print shop to create a large poster with facts about midwifery and MaMA that was displayed outside the hospital cafeteria all week.
Personal news
Kathryn has been asked to serve on the search committee for the next Executive Director of the American College of Nurse Midwives.
Robyn Churchill finished the Baystate Marathon in Lowell on Sunday, Oct 15 with a time of 3:33.
Mary Culliton , her husband Todd and son James will be welcoming a new addition to the family in early March! Mary’s doing well and looks fabulous.
