News from MaMA, Summer 2008

Editor’s note:  This is my last newsletter for mamah.org.  In September, my husband and I are moving to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia for the next 5 years.  We will both be at the University of Queensland; I will be studying for a PhD in the School of Nursing and Midwifery.  I’m turning over my reportorial tasks to Johanna Swift Hart.  It has been a privilege to work in this wonderful midwifery practice for the past 7+ years.  I wish you all health and happiness.

Maryann Long is leaving the practice to move with her husband to Australia in September (see editor’s note, above).  The announcement was made last week that Robyn Churchill will succeed Maryann as the practice director.  Maryann’s last day is August 29.

Marcia Snyder has also announced that she will leave MaMA and Cambridge, and even Massachusetts, sometime this fall.  She and her husband are relocating to the Chicago area, their home for many years before moving to Boston, where they will be close to their daughters and grandchildren and Marcia’s parents.  We are sad to lose Marcia, who has been here at MaMA longer than any of us!  We wish her all the best for the future and lots of hugs from those little ones.

Kathryn Kravetz Carr left the practice in May to enjoy her own pregnancy, and we wish her a very happy birth-day!

Julia Dickinson, our fabulous student from Yale who worked with us this past spring semester, has passed her certification exam (yay Julia!) and will join us around the beginning of August.  She will work at the Joseph Smith sites at first and probably begin practicing at Mount Auburn in September.  We’re really excited to welcome Julia aboard!

Megan MacInnes, Maryann Long, Robyn Churchill and Deb Gowen all spoke at the Annual Meeting of the American College of Nurse-Midwives in Boston over Memorial Day weekend.  Over 800 midwives were here for the event.

Mary Culliton will take the exam to become a certified colposcopist in July, and we expect that beginning in the fall she’ll offer colposcopy services to MaMA clients at the Hope Ave, Waltham office.  You need not be a Hope Ave client to see her there.  We are thrilled for her and for our clients who need this service!

MaMA midwives recognized at MIT Medical  We were surprised and pleased to learn a couple of weeks ago that the MIT Medical OB-GYN Department (Deb Gowen, Maryann Long, Marcia Snyder, Mary Culliton, with Drs Chana Wasserman and Annie Liau) were recognized with the ComMITment to Caring Certificate of Excellence from MIT Medical.  This is an annual award and the first time that OB-GYN has won.

Happy Summer, everyone.
