News from MaMA, Winter 2007
Practice news
In early December, we welcomed Tamara Jessiman, CNM to MaMA. She is a 1999 graduate of the BU midwifery program, and came to us from Lowell Community Health Center. She’s been very busy since she arrived, working in offices and on call and helping out with the Latina doula program.
MaMA clients and midwives have been enjoying the presence and contributions of our midwifery student, Kelly Roberts, since September. Kelly has been to several of our offices and has attended over 10 births with us so far. She’ll be with us until the end of June.
A new Centering Pregnancy group has started at the Joseph M Smith Community Health Center in Allston. This group, conducted in English and led by Julie Mann, is the first at Allston; we already have 2 going at the Waltham center conducted in Spanish and led by Robyn Churchill and Tamara Jessiman.
As one arrives, another departs: Ann Abbott has ‘retired’ after a long career in women’s health capped off by some 14 years as a midwife. She continues to work part-time in the Waltham (Hope Ave.) office, and makes postpartum visits to our new moms in the hospital. She’s keeping busy with her twin grandchildren and a new part-time job at Beth Israel working on a research project with our maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Dr. Kee-Hak Lim, and Marcia Snyder, who has reduced her hours with MaMA to participate in the study.
Personal news
We’re all waiting for news from Mary Culliton, who just started her maternity leave and is expecting her new addition around the beginning of March.
It’s going around: Julie Mann is expecting her own new addition in August.
Kathryn Kravetz is serving on the search committee for the new executive director of the American College of Nurse Midwives. As if that weren’t exciting enough, in March she’s going to Africa for 2 weeks to participate in a community assessment and health improvement program.
And, as always, Robyn Churchill is training for another marathon: Boston 2007, on April 16. This will be her 2nd time running Boston.
