PRACTICE NEWS
Robyn Churchill has been working extremely hard to launch and maintain her Centering Pregnancy group and the doula training program, both aimed at Spanish-speaking clients, at the Joseph Smith-Waltham site. The first group of doulas has completed training and the doulas have begun attending births with the midwives. Representatives of the funding agency recently visited Robyn’s program, sat in on a Centering session, and were very favorably impressed by what they saw. New plans are in the works for outreach to the Haitian community with the possibility of starting another Centering group to be conducted in Haitian Creole.
On January 10, we welcomed Laura Sundstrom, SNM to our midst. Laura is a student in the Yale University midwifery program and expects to complete it in May. She is working with us this semester, during her final clinical course. She is currently seeing clients at the Center for Women and taking call for births. Later in the term, she’ll have a chance to work in some of the other offices. Before midwifery, Laura studied library and information science, then changed her focus and became a doula. She goes home to New Haven whenever she can to see her new (as of New Year’s Day) husband!
Julie Mann, CNM, a recent graduate of the Yale program who was our student last year, will join MaMA in late January. More about Julie can be found in previous newsletters (see archives).
Meg Puente, who had been working per diem some weekends to get a little break from her very active twins, moved to the Chicago area around Thanksgiving. She plans to be a full-time mom there for the time being. We were sad to see her and her excellent Spanish skills leave.
