The Midwives at Mount Auburn practice is one of the oldest community hospital-based practices in the Greater Boston area. The practice opened in 1983 when the then chief of obstetrics, Dr. Phillip Stubblefield, asked certified nurse midwife Valerie Hodenius to start a hospital-based midwifery service. The original name was Mount Auburn Midwifery Associates, often known as MaMA.

In May, 2003, the Mount Auburn Midwifery Associates midwives welcomed the midwives of Women Care, another well-established practice working at Mount Auburn Hospital, to a new joint practice. In honor of this event, we decided to rename the group: the Midwives at Mount Auburn. We can still use the nickname, MaMA!

Here is what one satisfied client has to say:

"I was a first-time mom who looked and looked and looked for the best place in Massachusetts to have our baby. With MaMA, I found peace of mind...I cannot recommend them enough! You will be well taken care of (and so will daddy and baby!)...What a wonderful experience...I had the best possible care from people who treated me as an individual--with heart."
