| Janna Stephan, CNM My path to the Mount Auburn Midwives has been via the scenic route! After growing up in Minneapolis, MN, I left high school early to attend Simon's Rock College in the Berkshires. There, I studied a broad range of subjects that eventually led me to conclude that midwifery was the perfect profession to combine my passion for women's issues, health care, and social justice. I was able to gain a wide variety of experience in special education, high tech, international studies, and maternal and child health prior to attending midwifery school. Particularly memorable experiences include traveling to Costa Rica and Nicaragua to learn Spanish, as well as working as a doula at the Cambridge Health Alliance. While in graduate school I was able to pursue my interest in international health through a fellowship, studying labor practices in a rural hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, as well as completing a community health rotation at an orphanage for HIV-positive children in Trinidad and Tobago. After graduating with a Master's in Nursing from Yale University in 2004, I have been a midwife to women at a community health center in Hartford, CT, as well as at a community hospital on the North Shore of Massachusetts. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, reading, practicing knitting, wine and cheese pairings, and have recently become a fan of the Boston Celtics. |
